Mason Beehive Craft

Can you guess how many species of bees there are?

There are over 4,000 known species in North America, two of which are very popular in your backyard. They have important jobs. They pollinate flowers and vegetables in the garden. In fact, bees are responsible for one out of three bites of our food. You probably know that a honeybee gives us beeswax and, of course, honey!

You may not know about another kind of bee who doesn’t give us wax or honey but is even more efficient than the honeybee in your garden as a pollinator. Meet the Mason Bee!

Here is an example of how efficient these bees are: It takes 20,000 Mason Bees to pollinate an acre of fruit trees. It takes only 250 Mason Bees to do the same job. Wow!

So, let’s help these Mason Bees. They don’t live in hives like honeybees do. And they don’t require any care. But they sure do appreciate having a nice home for their young. Let’s help them. We’ll show you how to make a simple Mason Beehive for your backyard.
